Freak Show – 15 Mar

Big Telly Theatre Company is bringing Freak Show to Portico, Portaferry on Friday 15 March.

Supported by Ards and North Down Borough Council and Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Freak Show is a highly inventive blast of theatre which collides comedy, visuals and taut poetic text with true stories of people who were displayed as freaks in the 18th Century. Fast talking eejits are hell bent to get rich quick with their bizarre bazaar of curiosities and the unexpected, but they get more than they bargained for in this radical roadshow of revenge.

Freak Show was inspired by the true story of a giantess from Portrush, Co. Antrim called Mary Murphy who married a French sea captain, danced for William of Orange and was then exhibited across Europe in a travelling freak show. Further inspiration came from a poetry collection by N. Irish writer, Moyra Donaldson called Miracle Fruit which is dominated by a fascination with the 18th century Enlightenment period and the physical freakery of those who live on the ‘margin’.

The production examines themes of performance, exploitation and consent and reflects a contemporary fascination with fame, scandal and privacy. Clashing dark with light, it will contain maximum craic and heartbreak in spades. And an Irish jig. On stilts.

Freak Show is written and devised by Zoe Seaton and Nick Harley and features original music by Garth McConaghie, and stunning choreography from the team that made The Faerie Thorn, Big Telly’s highly acclaimed adaptation of Jane Talbot’s collection of adult faerie tales set on the North Coast. It premiered in the MAC at the Belfast International Arts Festival in November 18.
