Job Description

The Orchestra Manager’s primary role is to act as the line manager for all the Orchestra’s musicians and the Orchestra team. The Orchestra Manager functions as the key liaison between the Orchestra and the rest of the company and is responsible for carrying out the provisions in the Musicians’ Union Agreement and Staff Handbook. The Orchestra Manager is the line manager for UO musicians, Orchestra Coordinator and the Platform Attendants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the planning of Orchestra setup for rehearsals and concerts, and to co-ordinate with the Chief Conductor and guest conductors regarding special setup requirements
  • Ensure best practice and highest professional standards with regard to concert performance, recordings, venues and facilities, staging and equipment, in close conjunction with the Platform Attendants, including acceptable Health & Safety conditions according to regulations
  • Produce risk assessments, undertake site visits as required and raise any irregularities or potential issues well in advance
  • Roster contracted players, and contract high quality deputy and extra musicians as required according to programme and schedule, in line with contractual and budgetary requirements
  • Liaise with the HR Manager on all HR and personnel matters relating to the Orchestra’s musicians, including where appropriate: player hire, disciplinary issues and skills audits, and co-ordinating training, development and wellbeing provision
  • Attend Players’ Committee meetings to share information and discuss issues of concern; respond to orchestra member requests for information on scheduling and working conditions
  • Follow up on all requests in a timely manner to ensure efficiency of operations and responsiveness to colleagues’ needs
  • Promote positive relations between the Orchestra and the rest of the Company and support effective working relations and mutual respect across all functions
  • Ensure best possible physical working conditions for the Orchestra in all situations
  • Be responsible for Orchestra Health & Safety issues
  • Attend and manage all auditions processes and trial outcomes
  • Monitor players’ behaviour, concert dress and stage presentation
  • Maintain a detailed record of player attendance and absences
  • Maintain a list of appropriate extra players and deputies
  • Maintain a record of individual Player Sessions to ensure an equitable workload for musicians (with the Planning Manager)
  • Attend rehearsals and concerts as required, including a commitment to working outside normal office hours (i.e. evenings, weekends)
  • Wear black when on stage at concerts at all times (DJ for men, long black or trousers for women)
  • To act as an ambassador for the organisation at all times
  • To be the on-site point of liaison for all commercial partners, and for BBC events
  • Any other duties as may be required or requested

Personnel Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant experience working within the classical music or other arts sector and a good standard of education
  • Strong teamworking skills, both as part of a team and leading a team
  • Experience of preparing schedules and contracts
  • Sound knowledge of classical music, in particular orchestral repertoire
  • Demonstrable ability to liaise with musicians, artists and artist managers in a professional and discreet manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail with ability to multi-task
  • Ability to liaise with musicians in a tactful, supportive and clear manner
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the performing musician to enable them to give of their best
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to work days, evenings and weekends as required
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude to work
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office programs
  • Willingness to travel as required regionally across Northern Ireland, UK and internationally
  • Willingness to work in Belfast and be based in Northern Ireland

Desirable Requirements

  • Minimum of one-year experience working for a professional orchestra
  • Knowledge of MU agreements (i.e. BPI, PACT)
  • Awareness of relevant Health and Safety legislation (“Noise at Work” [2005])
