Scheduled guided tours take place Tuesdays at 11am and Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm – everyone is welcome to come to these without booking in advance. £10 pp with accompanied children free.
Guided tours, group or educational visits at Portico can be accommodated at any other time if booked ahead. Please contact us for further details.
In the summer season (May to September inclusive) guided tours are available, without appointment, on Tuesdays at 2pm, Thursdays at 11am and Sundays at 2pm. The tour lasts approximately one hour after which you are welcome to explore the building, its displays, the organ or our digital tablets for a further hour. The cost is £10 for adults (over 18 years) and accompanied children go free. There are no other concessions. Please note we only accept cash on the door.
The tours tell the fascinating history of the building’s architecture and restoration as well as encompassing interactive exhibitions on local history and on the history of western Christian church music (with audio samples). The organ loft displays explore the inner workings of the instrument and the history of the organ over the last two millennia. You also have the opportunity to play on the stunning new organ console – or let the organ give you a recital all on its own.
If groups have an interest in a particular aspect of Portico and its displays these can be explored in greater depth by prior arrangement.
Guided tours are available on other days, at other times and throughout the year by prior appointment. Please allow at least one week’s notice when making a booking.
