Belfast Exposed – Autumn Courses – through to October

Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera
Saturday 7 & 14 Sep
10am – 1pm

You will get an introduction to your camera’s manual controls, focusing on how to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO to correctly expose your photographs. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

Level 2: Develop Your Photography Skills
Saturday 5 & 12 Oct
2pm – 5pm

You will learn new camera settings and develop your photography skills, focusing on how to use white balance, metering, bracketing, focusing, histogram and more. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

Level 3: Documentary Photography
Saturday 7, 14 & 21 Sep
2pm – 5pm

The course offers contextual knowledge together with the technical skills and project planning skills. The course will cover all areas of documentary photography, from its origins and working photographers to setting challenges for each participant to think about their photography and the development of their project.

Level 3: Landscape Photography
Wednesday 2, 9 & 16 Oct
6pm – 9pm

Day 1 will be based in the studio where we will fully prepare you with the knowledge to move into the field of landscape photography with confidence, looking at both historical and contemporary work. Day 2 is on location, decided on day 1, as well as the choice between a sunrise shoot or a sunset shoot. Day 3 is back in the studio. The photographs taken on day 2 will be reviewed, with the tutor providing valuable, constructive feedback. Followed by further teaching on the subject.

Level 3: Street Photography
Saturday 5, 12 & 19 Oct
10am – 1pm

A street photograph usually features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places, and often has an idea, story or message going on beneath the surface. This creative and practical course will help you to develop and gain confidence in street photography, how to approach your subject, shoot candid shots and develop your personal style and technique.

Level 4: Design & Develop a Photography Project
Thursday 3 Oct – 2 July
6pm – 9pm

The course is delivered to 6 participants, consisting of 10 sessions over a 10 month period. The course consists of a mixture of group sessions, review sessions, and individual mentoring, delivered by Belfast Exposed’s team of tutors and professional photographers. The aim of the ‘Level 4’ course is to help each photographer develop a professional-standard portfolio of work based in his or her chosen area of photography. This portfolio of work could then be used to produce an exhibition, to create a photo book, or as access to higher education and university courses.

Photoshop Basics
Saturday 21 Sep
10am – 4pm

The course will introduce you to the Photoshop interface and will cover the basic Photoshop features such as working in layers, and techniques that you can use to adjust, correct and enhance your photographs.

Lightroom Basics
Saturday 19 Oct
10am – 4pm

The course will cover the basic Lightroom features and techniques that you can use to adjust, correct and enhance your photographs, how to prepare your photographs for printing, and how to catalogue and organise your library of images.

Cyanotype & Van Dyke Brown
Saturday 28 Sep
11am – 4pm

Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown printing are both contact printing processes, where a negative or an object is placed onto photosensitised paper or fabric, and exposed to the sun or a UV light. Photosensitive emulsion is brushed onto the paper by hand, making each print unique. This camera-less, iron-based technique was invented by John Herschel in 1842.

Pinhole Photography
Saturday 26 Oct
11am – 4pm

This unique workshop will bring you right back to the roots of photography. The workshop has been devised using the Ilford Obscura Pinhole Camera Kit using both paper and sheet film techniques to take your images. You will gain technical knowledge in how to use a traditional pinhole camera to take images from street scenes to portraiture.
