Artist Commission – Belfast City Cemetery Restoration Project – closing 30 Nov

Belfast City Council wishes to incorporate the following artist commission as part of the interpretation of the Belfast City Cemetery Restoration Project.

Built in 1869, Belfast City Cemetery is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the city. The site contains many fascinating historical features including the poor ground where over 80,000 souls lie in unmarked graves and an underground wall, which was built in Victorian times to separate Protestant and Catholic graves. Additionally, City Cemetery has a number of key listed heritage assets including the Central Steps, Victorian Fountain and Jewish Cemetery.

In July 2018 Belfast City Council was awarded funding from The Heritage Fund (formerly The Heritage Lottery Fund) to carry out a major restoration project at Belfast City Cemetery. The Council’s plans include a number of exciting initiatives designed to enhance the existing heritage within the site as well as the public’s ability to access and enjoy it. As part of the project a new visitor centre will be built on site, the centre will provide a space for welcome, orientation and learning. Many of the existing heritage assets within the cemetery will be restored including the Central Steps and Victorian Fountain. A host of new interpretive features will be added to the site designed to tell the story of the cemetery and support visitors to navigate the space and access information. A new programme of tours, talks, workshops and other activities will be developed to help unlock the stories of the cemetery’s rich history.
