Between Presence and Absence: Two Winter Weeks in North Mayo – Gabrielle Flynn – 4 Sept to 9 Oct

Between Presence and Absence is an exhibition by Gabrielle Flynn at Ballinglen Arts Foundation, in Ballycastle County Mayo. Gabrielle was awarded a residency and solo exhibition as an award from Sligo Institute of Technology and Ballinaglen Arts Foundation in her final year of her honours Fine Arts degree.

All the works in this exhibition are the outcome of her two week residency and are the result of her contemplation, through paint, of a previous significant visit to North Mayo. This body of work, according to Gabrielle, becomes a phenomenological enquiry and an emotional landscape. Each piece and the complete works together, endeavour, to communicate an inner life, informed by her relationship to North Mayo. Signifiers in Mayo become her inspiration. An empty mobile home, a past event, music remembered driving down a country road and a desire for her son and his new wife to follow her footsteps, all inform the work. For her, T S Elliot’s words ‘Time present and time past, Are both perhaps present in time future’ (Elliot, 1936) become a reality.

The exhibition opens on the 4th of September 2020, at Meet the Artist event on the fourth of September at 2.00 p.m. and runs until the 9th of October 2020.
