Laura Nelson will deliver a second edition of the typography workshop in response to the exhibition ‘Irish Modernisms’.
Working alongside Laura in this online workshop, participants will learn how to create their own piece of type. They will layout and draw a Clarendon M during the session. This typeface is used on the front of shops and high street businesses across Ireland and the UK. The font also fits into the Modernist era and is a central font for sign painters.
Participants will draw out an M for Modernism and include imagery such as the clover and Bridget’s cross found through the research of ‘Irish Modernisms’ co-curator Matt Retallick. Participants will look at Irish holiday posters depicting maps and modes of transport in Ireland from modernist.ie. There will be a discussion of the Clarendon alphabet and its significance within modernism and sign-painting. Laura will use this in relation to our current day situation in keeping holiday plans confined to this island.
Places are limited. Book your place through the link below. A materials pack will be sent out to each participant in advance of the workshop. For more information about this event please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
