Hughes responds to experiences gathered: of being within the landscape and sea, of being part of the culture and history of a place, of her own memories of a place. The daughter of a birdwatcher, she has always been drawn to coastal locations completing a number of artist residencies in Ireland, Norway and Iceland. As a traditional fiddle player you will often find her using her fiddle as a bartering tool, swapping tunes for local stories or a ride in a boat, experiences which feed directly into her art making.
Susan Hughes is an artist from Belfast using painting, video, installation and writing as processes and end products in her practice. She received a distinction in her MFA in 2021 from the University of Ulster receiving the Centre for Contemporary Art (Derry/L’Derry) and Platform Arts (Belfast) Graduate Awards and has been short listed for the RDS (Dublin) graduate award.
