Digital Photography

Level 1: Introduction To Your Digital Camera

Wednesday 13 & 20 Oct, 6pm-9pm
Wednesday 10 & 17 Nov, 6pm-9pm

You will get an introduction to your camera’s manual controls, focusing on how to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO to correctly expose your photographs. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

Level 2: Develop Your Photography Skills

Saturday 16 & 23 Oct, 2pm-5pm
Wednesday 8 & 15 Dec, 6pm-9pm

You will learn new camera settings and develop your photography skills, focusing on how to use white balance, metering, bracketing, focusing, histogram and more. This course will also enable you to apply a practical and theoretical knowledge to help you use a digital camera effectively and creatively.

Level 3: Street Photography

Saturday 6, 13 & 20 Nov, 2pm-5pm

Street photography is the art of capturing life, culture and humanity, commonly in a candid manner. A street photograph usually features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places, and often has an idea, story or message going on beneath the surface. This creative and practical course will help you to develop and gain confidence in street photography, how to approach your subject, shoot candid shots and develop your personal style and technique.

Level 3: Documentary Photography

Saturday 4, 11 & 18 Dec, 10am-1pm

The course offers contextual knowledge together with the technical skills and project planning skills. The course will cover all areas of documentary photography, from its origins and working photographers to setting challenges for each participant to think about their photography and the development of their project.

Film Photography

Level 1: Black & White Photography

Monday 8 & 15 Nov, 6pm-9pm

This course will be run over 2 x three hour sessions starting with picture taking, through to editing, processing, and printing your negatives. We also look at composition and taking images in full frame capturing the entire scene and obtaining correct exposure and metering techniques. The image taking skills are mirrored in our post-production learning.

Video Photography

Level 1: Learn the Basics of Video

Saturday 6, 13, 20 & 27 Nov, 10am-1pm

The course provides a general practical introduction to the field of video. It introduces basic concepts of the moving image with a limited amount of theory. You will learn how your DSLR/digital camera can introduce a new world of practical and creative options, however the field is vast and the uses and techniques available are many.

Printing and Presenting

Portfolio Review

Participant can choose date and time

The ‘Portfolio Review’ is designed for photographers with a developed and committed approach to their work. The purpose of the review is to provide photographers, and artists working with photography, the opportunity to present their portfolio and gain a professional opinion on their work and constructive feedback on their artistic development, and expand their professional network and exchange ideas.

Creating a Photobook

Saturday 4, 11 & 18 Dec, 2pm-5pm

This course will cover initial ideas, photographic terminology, editing and sequencing, publishing and marketing, printing and binding, expectations of production costs, and other issues you may encounter when producing a photobook. During the course there will be a guest speaker discussing the joys and follies of their photobooks.

Traditional Processes

Wet Plate Collodion

Saturday 27 Nov, 11am-5pm

Wet Plate Collodion is a 19th century photography process of creating images on glass or metal plates. This one day, intensive workshop will let you relive the excitement experienced by the pioneers of photography. Each participant will shoot and process their own unique ambrotypes, from start to finish.

Darkroom Hire

Participant can choose date and time

Belfast Exposed Darkroom is available to hire. It is accessible to all, from Monday to Saturday, from 10am-5pm. Before booking, participants must either have prior darkroom experience; be a past-participant of our ‘Film Photography’ courses; or have completed our ‘Darkroom Induction’.
