A new intergenerational project based in Ballycastle is bringing young people aged 15 – 19 years together with people 65 years+ to dance, move, share ideas, and chat over a cup of tea. The group, called Alternative Energies, meet on Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm, at the Ramoan Centre, 3 Station Street, Ballycastle, and they are looking for more young people to join them.
You don’t have to have any experience or be very fit, you just need to be willing to give it a go. Any young person taking part in youth awards or volunteering may be interested in this opportunity.
A young person currently involved in the project, said “The dance class is loads of fun, I’m really enjoying meeting new people and building friendships, everyone is so warm and friendly.”
This project is run by DU Dance (NI) and they believe that age is no barrier to dance. Historically dance has been a social gatherer of people of different ages and genders. Currently there are few such situations that bring together people of different ages. With advancements in digital technology and radical changes in forms of communication, plus the impact of the pandemic, the gap between the generations has further increased. DU Dance (NI) seeks to address this lack of connection and to challenge preconceived attitudes that obstruct integration.
Dr Philip Johnson, professional dance facilitator, who now lives in the area and is leading this group, said “There is great richness to be gained in an intergenerational dance class. It is a place of sharing between the generations that rarely happens outside the immediate family environment. The intergenerational class brings people together from all walks of life to share in the commonality of dance through: the joy of moving together, keeping the body in good health and creativity.”
The sessions are free of charge and you can come and try it out before committing. After that there will be opportunities to perform so regular attendance will be important.
