This World is Alien to Me – Aoibhin Maguire Painting Solo Show – 2 to 4 Feb

“We are delighted to announce our first exhibition of 2023 from @artist_aoibhin which will launch as part of Late Night Art Belfast 2nd February 6-9pm!”

Aoibhin Maguire is an artist from Belfast, who now lives and works in London. This Earth is Alien to me is Aoibhin’s first solo exhibition. Interested in emotion, place, home, storytelling, diaries, chaos and daydreaming, Aoibhin contrasts her complex subject matter with her use of bright colour – something which she has always been drawn to. The title ‘This Earth is Alien to me’ alludes to her experiences of Imposter Syndrome throughout her time on earth, as well as the inner doubts we all can have as we navigate through our day to day lives. Although these worries may sometimes make us feel inadequate and we do not always vocalise them, in reality they are a universal element of the human experience. Colour has always had healing properties for Aoibhin and at times her combining of this with humour and her overall love for paint can make difficult subject matter more approachable. Aoibhin channels her emotions through her paintings, making sense of things, reflecting on things. She combines raw thoughts with her vibrant imagination, creating hybrid worlds dreamed up from the real and the fictitious. For this exhibition, Aoibhin is choosing to present a selection of smaller, more intimate works, akin to the pages of a diary or a journal.

‘My paintings are worlds of juxtapositions. Stories of disorder, or maybe just a different type of order.

They are a dance between love and anger, fear and ecstasy, anxiety and bliss. A push and pull between hope and desperation, a constant conflict on canvas. They are filled with emotion, reoccurring symbols and a dose of nostalgia. The works are an overlap of reality and vivid imagination, of memories and the otherworldly. At times they are like parallel universes.

How would things be if it were not for that one thing?’
