Welcome to Hing Tong ‘Steve’ Cheung’s exhibition, where you are invited to explore not just paintings but windows into Steve’s memories and to travel alongside him without ever leaving the canvas. A group of mixed media works that draw from the artist’s lived experience, the works in this series are autobiographical in nature and depict real-life subjects and landscapes from around the world. From tranquil views of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter to the rampant waters of the Yellow River in China. Originating from Hong Kong, Steve and his family moved to Scotland in his formative years, where he studied Art for his Scottish O-Levels, later deciding to study Electronics and graduating from Strathclyde University, Glasgow. As life passed by; his professional life, his marriage to his wife Lin, 4 children, and 2 grandchildren, 42 years flew by, with each day filled with busy memories.
Amongst all of this Steve’s love of art never faded, but took a back seat to family and career. That is, until the unprecedented events of 2020, when Steve soon found himself, as many of us did, with an abundance of free time. Within this bubble of respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Steve reawakened his love and desire for drawing and painting. Starting back at the basics of pencil sketches before delving into the world of acrylics and oils. Laid upon this background of life, each brush stroke becomes a memory, and every colour reflects the mood of the locale, translating memories of the beautiful world and cultures around us into tangible, visual stories. Steve shares their personal journey, emotions, and connections with the people and places they’ve encountered.
