In the wake of rising violence against women and girls in NI and globally, Juanita Rea’s debut performance of her ACNI SIAP awarded piece, ‘The Vagina In The Room’ on October 30th at the Sonic Lab (SARC) is a timely and powerful story of healing from childhood sexual trauma and domestic violence.
Alongside spoken word, visual art and monologue, Juanita will be performing songs with pre-recorded music from a diverse range of musicians including Ciaran Lavery, Jonny Woods (Wynona Bleach), Nick Scott, David McCann, Bob Bowles, Nic Bailey, Liz Kelly and Bernard Jackson, Dave McMaster, Chip Bailey and Peter Wilson aka Duke Special.
The event includes a panel with award winning writers and activists Sharon Dempsey, Nandi Jola and Virginia Mendez and audience interaction to discuss the piece within the broader context of the urgent need to address violence against women and girls, in NI and globally.
The evening will end with the release of Juanita’s debut single, ‘Unashamed’ the title track of her debut album to be released in 2025.
The performance is suitable for adults only with attendees welcome to take self-care breaks in between pieces. Accompanying the performance is ‘Restoration’ a three-week installation which provides a multidisciplinary, interactive and meditative space for adults.
Juanita is a Visiting Scholar at the School of Arts, English and Languages, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) a recipient of 2 ACNI Minority Ethnic Awards (2021/2022) and a Global Talent Visa holder. Proceeds from these events go towards her visa extension fees.
