Visual Artists Ireland
We have received and carefully considered the concerns expressed regarding the current draft of the Programme for Government (PfG) 2024-2027, titled “Our Plan: Doing What Matters Most.” It has come to our attention that this draft has raised significant alarm within Northern Ireland’s arts, culture, and heritage sectors due to its omission of explicit recognition of the arts.
We acknowledge that the arts, culture, and heritage play a vital role in shaping our society. They are not merely a source of entertainment or leisure; they are fundamental to our identity, social cohesion, and economic prosperity. The previous PfG iterations, notably the 2016-2021 version, highlighted the importance of these sectors and their contributions to community building, education, and economic regeneration.
The absence of reference to the arts in the current draft is a matter of concern, as it suggests a potential undervaluing of the substantial impact that cultural initiatives and creative endeavours have on our communities. The arts are a powerful tool for social change, bringing people together, fostering understanding, and creating opportunities for dialogue and expression.
We urge the Assembly to reconsider the inclusion of the arts within the PfG. It is essential that we recognise and support the multifaceted contributions of artists, cultural organisations, and heritage practitioners in enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Northern Ireland. Their work not only enriches our cultural landscape but also plays a crucial role in attracting tourism, supporting local economies, and providing educational opportunities.
As we move forward in finalising the PfG, we call on all stakeholders—government officials, community leaders, and citizens—to advocate for the inclusion of the arts as a priority area. We believe that a comprehensive and inclusive approach to governance will ensure that our communities thrive and that every individual in Northern Ireland can participate in and benefit from the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage.
Together, let us reaffirm our commitment to the arts and culture as integral components of the Northern Irish experience, and ensure that our government plans reflect the values and aspirations of all our people.
