Landmarks project in Drumahoe

This YMCA group meet in Drumahoe, Londonderry on Thursday evenings. Their CAP Artist/facilitator is Caroline Devenny who has brought a wealth of ideas and inspiration to the participants.

During the first couple of sessions, the group collectively explored themes of identity by working on individual pieces of collage and mixed media. These incorporated printmaking, stencilling techniques and collected imagery. They are now working together to create a fun colourful mosaic mural to decorate their space.

They also worked on sculptural pieces from willow and tissue. These include personal information and imagery.

Caroline and the participants chatted about what the YMCA means to them. They considered possible images which might represent the inclusivity of the space for all of the users of the centre, the importance of remembering the ages, gender and character of the space. They used paper and markers to draw pattern, colour and scale.

Their plan includes a bright colourful logo and other positive images including hands, butterflies, jigsaws and fairies. They considered the space, decided which walls could be used and what could be achieved within the timeframe.
