Those in Young at Heart wanted to add to their existing creative palette by gaining new skills in silk painting. They have previously done watercolour painting so this seemed like a natural progression.
The increased cost of the materials meant that we sourced silk samples and in the end, some participants bought their own silk scarves to paint. They used the silk in really precious ways with sewing and beadwork, making the most of very small pieces, seeing beauty in how the paints interacted in the silk and making petit items like broaches, pictures, hangings and “bugs” with additional materials.
Many commented on how relaxed they felt because of the technique, that their work caught their attention and that their work surprised them. There was a lovely pace with this group, so silk painting really worked with them and it was an absolute pleasure to work in this location on the run up to Christmas.
