Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing, 2023 – Launch at the Seamus Heaney HomePlace on 30th April

The Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing, 2023

And the launch of ‘Compass’, this year’s Poetry in Motion Community anthology.

Firstly, we would like to apologise for an omission. We inadvertently neglected to include The Matinée by Wendy Sinnamon in our Long List, two weeks ago. The poem was also selected for our short list too. Congratulations to Wendy and the four other poets.

So all these poems and poets below, are in contention for the award. All of them… we have double-checked!

Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing, 2023, Short List:

  • The Matinée by Wendy Sinnamon
  • Grieving the Lost Language of my Grandmothers by Michelle Dennehy
  • Four Stories About (The Same) Crows, by Sue Steging
  • The Ponies by Maggie Doyle
  • Cracks by Marion Clarke

Apologies again to Wendy Sinnamon and best of luck to her and her fellow poets.

Copies of the anthology will be available free of charge to all published contributors on the day and additional copies may be purchased after the event. (£6 per copy, £10 for two)

The winner and runner up of the awards will be announced on:
