The Monthly interviews dancer and choreographer, Suzannah McCreight – Part 2 – Training to be a professional dancer

How do you move forward after your degree?

The Laban Centre created Transitions Dance Company as a bridge between training and the professional world of dance. I knew that if I got into that company it would set me up with a very strong foundation.

In that company, suddenly it was 10 people in a room, rather than a course with 60 people in it. It was quite an elite level programme with dancers from all over the world. It was run as a professional company although we were students. We were exposed to what was expected of professional dancer but given the support that students would need. It was incredibly intensive.

We learnt a repertoire with commissioned professional choreographers and the shows were toured every type of venue, from schools to residencies, theatres and international festivals. It really was a fantastic grounding in what was required to work professionally.

Was this physically demanding?

It was the hardest training I’ve done. Even though Transitions operated as a professional company, we were actually students on the Graduate Diploma in Performance. We were being trained in performance. It was supposed to prepare you for the demands of the job but actually it was more demanding than any job I’ve done since then.

Transitions become known as a company where, if you had been through it, you were considered to have worked to a high standard. It was full on, but it really helped prepare me for my dance career.
