The Monthly interviews local artist Clinton Kirkpatrick – Part 3 – Developing my own work

When you create your own work, what ideas are you investigating?

I am fundamentally interested in the human as many of us are, particularly the spaces that exist in our societies which alter and change things. Maybe the areas of power, and the power relations in society. I am interested in multiple things, from books that I read to conversations I hear. I write a lot of notes from the various interactions I go through. I play a lot with ideas.

There is a cartoonish element to my work, there is a figurative element to it and I do like the idea of distorting images and I can always shift the frameworks I use. I am interested in Surrealism but I am also not committed to any one style, I like the idea that my work can change and often it does very quickly. However, it is all distinctly a part of the same world in the work.

Where to now?

I am moving into a full-time space to work as an artist.  I have a new show opening in the Black Box in June and I will have another exhibition in Queen Street Studios in August. I am at an important moment in my career and life as an artist. There is a great vigour, intrigue and excitement about the possibility of what can happen in my work.
