The Monthly interviews local artist, Skye Bompas – Part 3 – Portraits

You also do portraits?

I have always loved drawing portraits, even way back when I was at school. My arts teacher wanted me to draw landscapes, you weren’t allowed to draw portraits, and I just drew body parts, hands, feet and faces. I rebelled against the demands of the teacher.

I love portraits partly because they are so hard to draw, tricky to capture the face, the mood changes, their character, the light, the background,  so much to take in.

Scott – Live Portrait – 2 Hours

I feel motivated watching artists who can create were ever they are, active artists with paint on their clothes and plaster in their hair. Therefore i love doing portrait painting live with the person there right in front of me. I do them mostly in water colours as the medium iis fluid and drie reasonably quickly. Portrait times range from 3 min sketch to a 10/15 min painting. Feels wonderful finishing a painting in a short time. I enjoy painting dogs and other animals although this is super tricky live so l take a photo and paint from that.

I love the immediacy of that work and I love being put on the spot and especially I like having people around me, watching me work. I tend to find a place inside myself which makes me work really well under those conditions.

Where to now?

I will be focusing on my classes, building up the clientele for that work. I am working on paintings of Piranhas and Vultures and other animals, examining a sense of danger or outside forces attacking you.

I am also working on a series of paintings which are more emotional paintings and I am working towards an exhibition, despite the price of framing going through the roof. I hope for exhibitions, sales, travel and more interesting people to paint.
