This CEMENT project was made by the group of adults at Willow Tree Lodge, Woodgreen. Artist facilitators Julie McGowan and Suzii McKenzie led this group to create their Ceramic and Sensory Installation.
Willow Tree Lodge is a residential care home for adults with disabilities, and this project allowed participants to make their habitual space more reflective of themselves, so that visitors would know more about the residents through their beautiful artwork. They embarked on a creative journey to design and install a unique ceramic and sensory-friendly art display. Spanning three floors of the facility, this collaborative project explores themes of identity, belonging, and community while showcasing the artistic talents and personal stories of the residents.
As the sessions progressed, residents delved deeper into the creative process. Through group and one-on-one sessions, they developed designs that reflected their personal stories and interests. Through using techniques like hand-printing and mark-making onto rolled clay slabs, they were able to bring their ideas to life through a capturing of their individuality, which set the foundation for the final installation. They later learned glazing techniques to add vibrant colours and finishes to their ceramic pieces.
Preparations were also made for the final installation in the centre. Measurements were taken across the three floors of Willow Tree Lodge, and residents provided input on lighting placement and the arrangement of their ceramic pieces. The collaborative effort ensured the design reflected their vision and individuality.
The last session was the culmination of the project as residents installed the final LED lighting system and placed their ceramic pieces across the three floors. They took ownership of the display, directing its final arrangement. A celebratory event brought everyone together to admire the finished installation and reflect on their shared achievements.
A big WELL DONE goes out to everyone at Willow Tree Lodge, Woodgreen!
