The Monthly talks to Community Arts Partnership’s TRASH Fashion Project Co-ordinator, Heather Douglas, about her own arts practice – Part 2 – Now painting regularly

After completing the art course, you started painting regularly?

Yes. both Louise Fletcher and Nicholas Wilton (Art2LIfe) are Abstract Expressionist painters and I started painting using that form. It took me a little bit of time for me to build my confidence to show people what I was painting; I had an idea that people didn’t think much of abstract work. I am now, slowly, getting up the courage to show people my paintings.

Do you have a process when it comes to producing a painting?

I don’t have a specific process, rather I sort of start painting intuitively and see where the painting takes me. I tend to paint at night and can paint into the early hours, layering paint and experimenting with texture, mixed media and colour .

I have been working on transferring my artworks to things like cups, cushions .and I am looking to see how the art will transfer to clothing and other textiles.

Where to now?

My plan, if there is one .Is to keep going forward to find my own way of expressing myself. I am working with Shelley Tracey again, she is writing poetry and I am working on illustrations to sit alongside her work and maybe we will exhibit our collaboration .

I now share a studio with Sally Young, so I’m looking forward to some studio time with the girls. I will see where this all takes me, but the main thing is that I am back creating my own work again.
