North Down Museum has launched its latest initiative as part of the museum’s strategy to improve its accessibility to families in the Borough. The ‘Little Historians’ gallery will provide local families with a fun interactive learning experience. The gallery has been designed to engage children of all ages and abilities in learning about history. The museum mascot ‘Belle’ will take children on a journey through time where they will learn how life in the Borough has changed from the prehistoric to the present day.
To help young visitors understand more about the past, each element of the gallery is designed to be an educational tool. From an interactive timeline to a new dress-up area with hand-made, authentic costumes, children will enjoy learning about their ancestors. Table-top activities and a new range of children’s books in the story corner are suitable for all ages and complement additional learning about key aspects of local history. All information has been interpreted with children in mind, to ensure young visitors and their families enjoy their experience at North Down Museum and learn something new during their visit.
Speaking about the gallery, North Down Museum’s Education and Outreach Officer, Ruth Verner, said:
“It is so important to us that children of all ages feel that museums are a welcoming space with stories that capture their imagination. Our successful schools programme sees many children visiting the museum, but now we hope they return with their families and further their understanding of our past.”
North Down Museum’s Manager, Arlene Matthews commented:
“At North Down Museum we are committed to making our museum accessible to everyone in our community. The new gallery will help us to improve the quality of family visits, by providing a fun learning experience for children of all ages.”
Admission is free.
