Alan Magee comments on the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing 2025

The humble bumblebee can literally turn sound into flight. No poet can claim as much, but sometimes, when poets swarm, they resonate an energy which feels similar.

The launch of the Poetry in Motion Community anthology 2024/’25, including the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing this August, was one such exceptional event.

The project presents a unique opportunity for local poets to share and celebrate their imagination and testimony.

The team at the Community Arts Partnership are incredibly professional and care deeply about poetry. This friendship and support is wholly reassuring to everyone involved in the process.

The anthology offers personal insights, exposes challenges, confronts assumptions and demands exploration.

Some poems feel visceral or natural, others comforting or contemplative in their scope. There is an astounding array of serious talent on display.

It was an honour to have my poem, ‘Newsworthy: Sednaya Prison – A Mother’s Lament’ longlisted for the award this year.

I wish everyone the best on their poetic journey.
