”We are delighted to present this body of paintings and drawings by Simon Carter. Spanning more than a decade, the works bear witness to his sustained and intimate engagement with the diminishing salt marshes of the North Essex coastline. The threshold where land meets water will resonate with Irish landscape enthusiasts, yet Carter approaches this terrain with a finely judged balance of abstraction and figuration. Familiar forms emerge through painterly motifs, revealing not only the gradual construction of the landscape but also the visible, considered processes through which the works themselves come into being.”
Simon Carter is a co-founder of the Contemporary British Painting platform, and is represented by Messum’s Gallery in London. We encountered Simon’s work recently at the F. E. McWilliam Gallery, where two of his paintings formed part of a wonderful exhibition drawn from the private collection of Lord and Lady Belmore. The forthcoming exhibition at La Roche House, Belfast offers a unique opportunity to see a substantial body of Simon’s work in person, without the requirement for a ferry or a flight!
