The Cramlington Train Wreckers – 8 July

Commemorating the centenary of the 1926 General Strike, The Cramlington Train Wreckers tells a powerful and deeply moving true story of working-class solidarity.

Following a sell-out run in England in November 2024, this acclaimed production arrives at Derry Playhouse for one night only, ahead of performances at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall (9 July) and a transfer to Newcastle Theatre Royal (12 July).

Set against the turbulent backdrop of post-WWI Britain, the play recounts the extraordinary events of 10 May 1926. On the seventh day of the General Strike, striking miners in Cramlington, Northumberland, inadvertently derailed the Flying Scotsman with 281 passengers on board. Remarkably, no lives were lost.

In the aftermath, eight miners were sentenced to a combined 48 years’ imprisonment, held far from their families. Following widespread labour and trade union pressure, they served half their sentences and returned home as heroes.

Written by Ed Waugh, this compelling production brings to life an inspiring story of resilience, community, and collective action—reminding us of the enduring power of unity in the face of injustice.

Writer Ed Waugh will visit Derry in June for a series of talks. Details will be available via the show’s website.
