‘Our imaginative estate’: Heaney Letters Display – 1 to 30 Sept

From the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

In partnership with PRONI, we are delighted to display in our library copies of correspondence from Seamus Heaney to John Hewitt from 1966 to 1972. These letters chart the ‘rhythm and routine’ of family, work, and writing. Hewitt endorsed the younger mentee with a glowing review of Death of a Naturalist for the Belfast Telegraph in 1966 declaring, ‘We confidently expect him to broaden his range and our imaginative estate.’ In one letter Heaney’s appreciation of Hewitt’s ‘parental’ mentorship ‘in establishing one’s confidence’ is evidenced.
