Household are looking for artist proposals for three funded, six-month research and development focused residencies at The Living House, our space on the Antrim Road. Each residency will culminate in a public moment in June 2027, with research and work made during the five month period from January to May 2027 shared publicly in a format that feels appropriate to you.
Selected artists will receive a fee of £1500, a materials budget of £1000; production and curatorial support from Household; and a space in which to make work that is suited to your practice.
The Living House is a collaboration between Household and MMAS architects to inhabit and re-animate a building at 489-491 Antrim Road, a dual use dwelling with both a domestic and commercial function. Within the neighbourhood setting and context, alongside MMAS’s socially engaged and community focused architectural practice and coffee kiosk Parakeet, Household will host an artist residency space and programme, and eventually a ‘living archive’ that connects with the creative potential of the domestic and the city’s past, present and future. The Living House will function as a ‘third place’, a creative space and a new ecology that fosters gathering, conversation, exchange and diverse communities of interest and place.
Household’s recent programming and research explores activating domestic spaces for critical artistic production, affective relationships between the private and the public, and how these connections can be actualised and shared. You can find more information about what we do, and how we work, on our website.
For the residency, we are looking for speculative ideas for how you would like to engage with The Living House, and connect with people and place through your practice. This will include a proposal for how you would engage with the local neighbourhood across the residency, as well as an idea of the type of work space you might require – a desk space, studio, a space where public interaction can take place, or a space outside, for example. In addition, the proposal will include a brief indication of how you would like to structure your time on residency.
The residency is open to Belfast-based artists. We are particularly interested in proposals that relate closely to our local neighbourhood, and in working with artists who are resident in North Belfast. We will accept collaborative proposals, however please note that these will follow the same fee structure as individual applications.
