TRASH Fashion Special – The Monthly talks to Eimear Harkin about her experiences throughout the TRASH Fashion Project

How did you get involved with the TRASH Fashion Project?

I got involved through CAP Arts and Resource Centre in Belfast

Which group did you work with and how did you find the experience?

Newhill Youth and Community Association

I found the experience incredibly inspiring. Watching the girls dive into the creative process with such ideas and seeing how resourceful they were with materials. It reminded me why I love working in community-based art. There was a real sense of joy and discovery in the room. It wasn’t just about making clothes,It was about giving them permission to take risks, to play, and to see value where others might see waste.

What were your thoughts on the end of project TRASH Fashion Gala at Belfast City Hall?

The TRASH Fashion Gala at Belfast City Hall was such a beautiful and powerful culmination of the project. Seeing the girls walk the runway in the clothes they made, right in the heart of such an iconic space in the city was unreal. It felt like a celebration not only of creativity and sustainability, but also of their courage and growth throughout the workshops.Watching them own the stage with their unique outfits and be cheered on for their work made it clear how impactful the experience had been.

Any last thoughts?

I feel really proud. The girls put so much heart into what they made, and seeing them walk that runway in outfits they created from scratch was such a powerful moment. It was fun, it was chaotic at times. But overall an experience I won’t forget.
