2025 is the year to try your hand at pottery! By public demand after success of the Loaf wheel throwing experiences, Loaf’s resident potters have developed this ten week course for beginners and improvers. They will also deliver the course with at least two tutors facilitating nightly!
The 10 weeks course will run Wednesday nights from September to mid November, offering 12 dates to complete the course , which allows for sick days/ holidays/etc.
Week 1:
Introduction- Seize the Clay – You will learn about clay and the process of ceramics while getting to know the equipment. After a short induction you will get started on preparing clay for your first throwing / hand building session and explore some basic techniques.
Over the course of the next weeks, you will focus on the basics of wheel throwing and hand building skills. The course will cover centring clay, pulling up walls, creating various shapes, turning items and attaching handles.
You will also be taught how to use a slab roller and make items using drape moulds. You will also explore multiple surface decoration techniques by using tools and coloured slips. Creativity and experimenting are highly encouraged as you design and personalize your items.
There are ten spaces on the course, which will take place in our cozy pottery in 24 Main Street in Crawfordsburn. You will have 2 workshop rooms available which allow space to hand build and throw on the wheel. They are fitted with 2 workbenches, 6 tabletop wheels, 2 sit down wheels, a slab roller and extruder. Your items will be stored safely on site during the length of the course while you keep working on them. NOTE: This class is for adults 18 years+ only
