Opening night: Thursday 14 August, Late Night Art East 6–8:30pm
Fragmented Crossings is a solo presentation of work by QSS artist Anushiya Sundaralingam, charting experiences of migration, and the shifting tides of home and identity in relation to place.
Note from the artist:
My practice is rooted in exploring themes of displacement, identity, and resilience, shaped by my personal journey of migration from Sri Lanka to Northern Ireland. The experience of navigating multiple cultural landscapes sits at the core of my work, prompting reflection on broader social and political issues such as migration, belonging, and memory.
I work across a range of media—painting, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, installation, and performance. Each medium offers new possibilities for engaging with my ideas, allowing me to construct layered narratives that challenge fixed perceptions of place and self. I use form and material to develop a visual language that speaks to the fragmentation and reconstruction central to the immigrant experience.
At the heart of my practice is the human condition—how we adapt, resist, and redefine ourselves in changing environments. While my work is grounded in personal history, it also resonates with shared experiences of displacement and the search for home. Through abstraction and symbolism, I examine how memory and identity can be both fragile and enduring, particularly within contexts of conflict and upheaval.
My current body of work reflects on the emotional and physical journeys of migration, tracing the uncertainty and hope that accompany these transitions. By engaging with these themes, I aim to provoke reflection on how displacement shapes not only individual lives, but the collective human narrative.
Fragmented Crossings is supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant programme.
